About Us

The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter is open 24/7 providing both overnight shelter and well as a Day Program.

The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter operates 365 days a year is a 24 hours facility. Our day program is open to the public from 8am-4pm daily, with lunch available at noon. Our shelter facility, serves 38 guests with the addition of four emergency winter beds during inclement weather. We serve our guests breakfast and dinner, daily.  All of our guests are assigned a case manager upon entry for the purposes of linking with resources and community services in order to obtain longterm, stable, safe, and affordable housing.  We utlize collaborative relationships with government and social service agencies in order to ensure we link our guests with every possible resource.  Our goal is to keep the guests housed permanently and avoid repeat episodes of homelessness.

Eligible Population: To stay overnight at the Shelter a person must be 18 years of age, not be overtly under the influence of drugs (including alcohol), not have a unresolved history of seriously inapproprate behavior at the Shelter, or present with behavioral or medical needs clearly beyond the scope of the Shelter's mission and capacity.  Within reason and each individual's limitations, each guest must agree to work on a plan to secure more appropriate housing or treament to make and keep appointments and any other activities that will help with securing other housing or residence. Determination of eligibility is based on overall appropriateness in regards to the safety and welfare of guests and staff.

Expectations and Length of Stay: Guests of the Shelter sign a contract stipulating that they will abide by the Shelter rules and work to obtain more suitable housing or treatment.  In essence, they must agree to invest in their own care and keep appointments and commitments with case managers and with service and housing providers.  They must also get along within the Shelter, stay sober and not abuse any substance, show up on time for 5 pm check in and 10 pm lights out, do assigned chores and generally contribute to support the operation of the facility.  There is therefore no chronologically defined maximum length of stay - as long as a guest is trying to do the right thing and is getting along within the Shelter rules, s/he may continue to stay.
