Time:

Our volunteers are very important to us.  We work with individuals and groups to take care of projects around the Shelter.  Volunteers do everything from clerical work to carpentry. If you have a skill and would like to donate time, please contact us for a volunteer application.  Please keep in mind, we receive many applications and try to work together for the benefit of all.

Food:
Food donations go a long way- everything from leftovers from an event to canned goods.

On October 1, 1996, President Clinton signed the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act to encourage the donation of food and grocery products to non-profit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. This law makes it easier to donate. Here’s how:

•It protects donors from liability when donating to a non-profit organization.
•It protects donors from civil and criminal liability should the product donated in good faith later cause harm to the needy recipient.
•It standardizes donor liability exposure. Donors and their legal counsel no longer have to investigate liability laws in 50 states.
•It sets a liability floor of “gross negligence” or intentional misconduct for persons who donate grocery products.
•Congress recognized that the provision of food close to recommended date of sale is in and of itself, not grounds for finding gross negligence. For example, cereal can be donated if it is marked close to code date for retail sale.

Money:
Money is vitally important to our doors remaining open. The money you donate is put to good use and even the smallest amount makes a difference. Donating money to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter shows your support, just the same as donating your time.

Additional Info on How to Donate

With the end of the calendar year approaching, some folks are thinking about making the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their retirement account.  Did you know that you may be able to avoid taxes on the RMD or other distributions?  A Qualified Charitable Distribution moves money directly from your retirement account to a charity (like BAHS) with no taxes due.  Check with your tax adviser to see if this could work for you.
